I'm going to start by stating a very pretentious sounding cliché — "Design is not something you're taught". It might be a cliché, but it's kinda true. I can't explain how I design things, or "dream up stuff", because I've never had to actively think to come up with a design. Since I don't follow "steps", I can't give anyone else any. But I do chronicle some things I think about in the Development and Design category.

As far as programming goes, I'm a terribly undisciplined and contextual learner. I learn things that are important and what's related to them — not the whole book. But if you want a good place to start, I would say C/C++. They are the mother of all languages, and a good base in those will really set you on your way. Experiment on your own, and give yourself challenges. That'll help you create and think creatively too.

All my recent work has been as an employee of Racked Hosting, and company policy prevents me from showcasing those works in a personal portfolio. I want to get back into designing, so I'll probably keep coming up with mock-ups and concepts from time to time. They'll all be there on my biography page, as always.

Good luck on your future endeavors, I personally was a bit curious as to how you were tweeting away on a Monday morning when you were supposed to be at RH. Of course, I took a guess at holiday/leave from office, but I didn't think you were leaving.

I'd be curious to learn some of your workflow - how you learnt programming, how you design stuff, how you dream up stuff etc. If you have time to write on Geekaholic more often, please do consider it :)

And it'd be awesome if you can put up a portfolio of your recent and past work - not to brag, but just to let people who follow you on the web (like me) take a peak at your work....
