I made the decision to quit news reporting a long time ago, because I had ~200 feeds and most of them were mirrors (now down to 55; no news blogs except Techcrunch and Torrent Freak). I still frown when I see news posts by blogs that usually do informative tutorials (perhaps for SERPs).

And one thing to note: ads are not always click-based. During my two Digg successes, my ad revenue was a grant $0 because I put only an AdSense block at the end (hoping for some CPA ads). Having learned from the tragedy( ;) ), I used impression-based ads (Burst Media) during third last Digg success and got $200, which is not too shabby for the effort I put in (2 hours). But you're right about 'Page views don’t mean squat' - even advertisers actively query feed subscription and returning visitors figures.

I have to toil through numerous entries every day, which tell the same thing. Essentially, I have a label called "Tech News" where I just browse through the titles of posts from the likes of Techcrunch, Engadget and Lifehacker! And the percentage of those which I bother reading is a mere 10-15%
